History of uMngeni

During the 1840s travellers moving north from Pietermaritzburg crossed the Umgeni River just west of present day Howick at the Alleman's Drift. In 1849, the Wesleyan Missionary James Archbell bought three farms above the northern bank of the Umgeni River. Title deeds of the original plots simply named the area

"The Village on the Umgeni Waterfall".

"A series of spectacular waterfalls surround the area, which is about 29km north-west of Pietermaritzburg. At the centre of this system, nestling on the banks of the uMngeni River in the heart of the Natal Midlands, is the beautiful town of Howick and its pride, the 94m-high Howick Falls. The area is also the home of the Mandela Capture Site, which attracts a lot of local & international tourists. The Midmar Dam which is a combined gravity & earth-fill type dam and recreation area is located near Howick ."
