ESKOM/uMNGENI TALKS STREET LIGHTS
21 January 2021
Eskom is the main supplier and service provider for most of the uMngeni area. This includes Merrivale, Howick West, Howick South, Merrivale Heights, Nottingham Road, Lidgetton and the rural areas. uMngeni only supplies Howick and Mpophomeni.
This means that many of our residents are reliant on Eskom for electricity and street lights.
On Friday a delegation from uMngeni made up of the Mayor, Depury Mayor, Head of Department for Technical Services and Head of Electricity met with Eskom to discuss a number of issues affecting uMngeni residents.
In 2021 Eskom suddenly cancelled their service to repair street lights. This was to support their own cost cutting measures. However this meant that many areas have not been serviced because special permits are required to work on Eskom Low Voltage lines. This has led to a big backlog in street light repairs.
During the meeting Eskom agreed that the current contractor in uMngeni, Rock Power, can be authorized to repair street lights on Eskoms power lines.
The uMngeni Municipality will now expedite the process of getting Rock power accredited so that street light repairs can begin in Howick West, Howick South, Merrivale, Merrivale Heights, Lidgetton and Nottingham Road.
This should take 3 to 4 weeks to implement.
We are glad that we have been able to negotiate this agreement that will see street light services return to the affected areas.
