STATEMENT

uMngeni Municipality objects to Eskom's request for a 20.5% tariff increase. 

 

Our local economy and our residents have been battered, abused and bruised by rising costs, the pandemic, the economic downturn and the July riots. The proposed 20.5% tariff increase will further burden our residents. 

 

On behalf of the residents of uMngeni Municipality we have have objected to any excessive increases. 

 

It is not fair that the residents of uMngeni must be burdened by Eskom's known challenges. There are alternative strategies that can be implemented by Eskom in order to avoid excessive increases.

 

Alternatively Eskom must allow local Municipalities to source cheaper sources of electricity from independent producers. 

 

As a caring Municipality we will continue to work for the wellbeing of our residents and object to decisions that make life harder for the poorest of the poor.
